Purpose
The American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery (AAO-HNS) wishes it smembers to engage inhumanitarian efforts. Humanitarians are those who charitably lay down their life ofr others in need; that is, their professional skills, time, physical efforts, spiritual commitment, and financial resources. The Humanitarian Efforts Committee helps the AAO-HSN Foundation as an organization, and its members as individuals, to serve humanity's needs in this medical specialty thoughout the world. Our goal is achieved though domestic and international patient care, preventative medicine, and education. As an extension of this desire, travel grants are given to provide an opportunity for residents in otolaryngology-head and neck surgery benevolently to give a perios of professional service to the people of a developing country.
Duration of Service
A minimum of one week at one site.
Hospital Location
The recipient of this grant is responsible for contact and agreement with officials of the institution and the country in which he or she desires to serve. The AAO-HNS Foundation's Humanitarian Efforts Committee will assist in providing serveral possibilities of institutions desiring such service. This grant is specifically for service in seriously underserved areas, both within or outside the United States.
Financial Aid
Grant of $1,000 are available, and the Foudnation may award up to 15 grants per year. Grant applications must be for future trips. The recipient must raise additional funds for travel, living expenses, and so on. The service must be completed no later than one calendar year after the grant is awarded. Grant recipients who are unable to make their planned trip within the one year period will be required to return the grant monies, but will be eligible to re-apply for future grants.

Eligibility and Deadlines
An application may be received from resident members of the Academy who will have completed at least two years of otolaryngology residency training (excluding surgical internship) in an accredited program at the time of service. Academy members in training fellowships are also eligible. Prior Humanitarian Efforts Resident Travel Grant recipients are ineligible.
NOTE: Next deadline to apply is November 30, 2008 for January-June 2009.
